If you’re not yet a Nyles Monahan fan, you should be. Join hundreds of others, and read or listen to the veteran, meticulous (almost to the point of OCD), and slightly depressed detective as he wraps his brilliant mind around the strangest cases you’re gojng to come across in a long time.
In I, Carlos, Nyles is tormented by the condition of his wife, who has had a stroke and is in a vegetative coma. As he fights his depression, he becomes involved in the investigation of a strange string of murders that seem to follow the plot of the classic thriller, The Day of the Jackal. The killer has had a computer chip implanted in his head with the plot of the thriller on it, so he would feel as if he were actually in the novel, acting as the assassin. When he had a heart attack and his brain stopped functioning for a minute, the chip took over, and when he woke up, he had the identity of Carlos the Jackal and set out to assassinate the U.S. president. Nyles must figure this out and track down the killer before he completes his mission. It’s a techno-thriller with non-stop action.
In Chasing Tales, following his successful apprehension of the Carlos killer, Nyles retires, his wife having recovered from her stroke. He travels tp Boston to do what he can to assist his childhood friend, Father Tom O’Flannery, who has been accused of molesting an altar boy thirty years earlier, Nyles returns to his birthplace to help his friend, only to find that the priest’s accuser has been killed and Father Tom has been charged with murder. One murder leads to another, as Nyles’ witnesses disappear almost as soon as he discovers them, until he finds both himself and his brother’s family in danger as he searches for a child molester and cold-blooded killer. Chasing Tales is an intricately plotted detective thriller, filled with twists, turns, and mounting danger, which is sure to please Nyles Monahan fans.
